What is acetylcholine?

Acetylcholine is the acetic acid ester of choline, CH COOCH C N OH; the chemical transmitter of the nerve impulse across a synapse; also released by the endings of parasympathetic nerves upon stimulation; produces cardiac slowing, vasodilatation, increased gastrointestinal activity, and other parasympathetic effects; it is hydrolyzed and inactivated by the enzyme cholinesterase; available as acetylcholine bromide and acetylcholine chloride.
