What is aspartate aminotransferase?

Aspartate aminotransferase is an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the reversible transfer of an amino group from L-glutamic acid to oxaloacetic acid to form α-ketoglutaric acid and L-aspartic acid; used to diagnose viral hepatitis and myocardial infarction.
