What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a complex of symptoms caused by any condition that compresses the median nerve in the carpal tunnel of the wrist, beneath the transverse carpal ligament; marked by pain and numbness in the area of the hand innervated by the median nerve; the duration and degree of nerve compression determine the patient's complaints; in late stages there is atrophy of thenar muscles.
